Young single soldiers on the look-out for love may find themselves increasingly turning to the internet to locate that special someone.

This is because Sean Flack, writing for the Iowa State Daily, has suggested the popularity of online dating among the younger generation is flourishing.

The reporter noted that – as a society – people find interaction through an electronic medium less scary than speaking to a stranger in person.

He explained: "Hiding behind a computer screen, you can take the time to formulate responses and avoid awkwardness."

Mr Flack revealed he has been courting via the web for a few months now and has enjoyed considerable success, noting there are hundreds of girls to choose from in his vicinity.

Online dater Belinda Dicker – who met her husband in cyberspace – recently claimed the internet enables users to learn a lot about a prospective partner before they agree to hook up, the Berwick Leader reported.
