York is gearing up for two events this weekend that will aim to generate money to help soldiers injured in action.

The city is playing host to a large US-style barbecue as well as a family fun day – with funds generated being donated to Help for Heroes, local newspaper The Press reports.

Food from the giant barbecue – called a Jambo Pit – will include large joints of pork and brisket and is to be served up at The Cottage Inn, Haxby.

Line dancing and music will also be performed at the event, while attendees can also play roulette and blackjack.

The family fun day is being held at St Oswald's Church of England School in Fulford and head teacher Rupert Griffiths said: "People should come along because hopefully they will have a good day out and will raise money for a really good cause."

Representatives of North West Ambulance Service and Cheshire Police are to take part in a charity football match this weekend, with all proceeds going to the Help for Heroes cause.
