The stars of the X Factor have reached the number one spot with their single aimed at raising money for brave soldiers.

Recorded by the 16 singers who made the final of the hit television contest, the rendition of David Bowie's Heroes topped the charts after 144,000 copies of the record were sold in the first week alone.

It means only Cheryl Cole's The Promise and Everybody Hurts, which was recorded as a charity song in aid of the Haiti disaster, have shifted more units in such a short space of time.

Favourites such as Matt Cardle, Rebecca Ferguson, Cher Lloyd and One Direction all appear on the single – sales of which will help to fund five regional Personnel Recovery Centres for the Help for Heroes charity.

X Factor finalist Paije Richardson recently claimed he felt inspired when he visited soldiers being aided by the Help for Heroes cause, the Sun reported.
