A charity walk is being organised in Woodley to raise money for a war memorial statue.

Cash is being collected as the town looks to get the £25,000 required in order to fund the project, Get Wokingham reports.

The monument will honour all of the fallen soldiers from the town and the three-mile trek will feature the Woodley Scouts and members of the 7th Rifles Territorial Army.

Fundraiser for the Woodley Memorial Project Colin Lott told the news provider: "We have now had detailed scaled drawings completed and submitted to four stone masons for tender."

So far, veterans and military families have already collected £8,500 to go towards the costs of the scheme, while Woodley Town Council – which represents approximately 26,000 residents – has also thrown its backing behind it.

As well as sponsored rambles, collections at pubs and social clubs are taking place, while local businesses have also given the initiative their backing.
