Two women have been discussing their 56-year long pen pal friendship.

Bermudian Marlene Warren and Canadian Joanne McQuay have been writing to each other for so long that they view themselves as sisters rather than friends, the Royal Gazette reports.

The pair first met up in person 45 years ago and have shared all of each other's significant life landmarks.

Families, hobbies and daily life take up the majority of their conversations, as they like to keep the other one in the loop.

Ms Warren stated: "We met for the first time when I was 19 and that sort of solidified our relationship. I … really had a good time meeting her relatives."

Common interests include travelling and reading, while Ms McQuay said that family is very important to both of them.

Despite not seeing each other that often, Ms McQuay believes their similar outlooks on life have kept their friendship strong.
