Any type of dating is going to come with it's own range of challenges. If finding the perfect partner was easy, everyone would be hitched by now.

While you may think that online dating is a better option than trawling bars or asking friends to set you up, there are still a few things to remember.

Here are some of the important points about online dating that you really shouldn't forget:

You need to be patient

It's very rare that you set up your profile, send your first message and find yourself in your ideal relationship. Online dating isn't magic and you probably won't meet Prince or Princess Charming straight away.

Be prepared for some rejections, a few bad matches and a bit of time to pass before you find someone that seems promising. Having patience is the most important thing when it comes to dating online – or dating in general – so you shouldn't let yours run out.

Giving up before your online dating journey has really begun could mean you miss out on finding someone really great, so make sure you hang in there!

Trust is key

One big difference between online dating and meeting people in person is that there are more chances for them to fib a bit about who they are. You really need to trust what someone is telling you and what their profile says in order for things to go any further.

That's not to say that you can't find ways of getting proof of their claims when talking to them online; you do, after all, want to make sure they are who they say they are before taking things further. However, trust is important and if you feel that you can't trust someone, it is a good idea to go with your gut.

You don't want to get really involved in an online relationship only to meet someone in person and find they are totally different, so be careful but don't risk ruining a good relationship by being too cautious.

You should be honest

Just as you need to trust what people say about themselves, you also need to be honest in what you put in your profile and tell others. You should only put the truth in your profile, use a recent photo and give a real account of yourself.

Failing to do this can do more harm than good, as you'll ultimately be the person that potential partners can't trust. It is better to be totally honest and start a relationship as yourself rather than pretending to be someone else, which will only leave you lonely in the long run.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket

Yes, you may have met someone you quite like and be chatting to them online, but this doesn't mean you have to ignore messages from other potential suitors. This is all part of dating – you get to see what your options are and keep them open until you're sure you want to take things further with another person.

However, you should be open about the fact that you're talking to other people or you risk upsetting someone and ruining your relationship before it has even started.

You stand a better chance of meeting someone if you're open about starting conversations with various people, so definitely don't put all your eggs in one basket.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801823072-ADNFCR
