Girls who set their profile picture on online dating sites to one in which they are wearing red stand the best chance of finding Mr Right via the medium, it has been claimed.

Marketing professor Adam Alter has examined numerous studies as part of writing his latest book Drunk Tank Pink, and he concluded red is definitely the colour of love on the internet.

It was discovered that red is most likely to generate positive responses in people who browse a profile.

Experts from the University of Rochester, New York, said men find ladies more attractive and are more likely to spend money on them when they are in red.

"The message here couldn't be simpler. If you're trying to attract a member of the opposite sex, red dresses and red shirts give you an ever-so-slight romantic advantage," Mr Alter is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying.

It might not always be as simple as wearing red, but ladies should do anything that might give them an edge in the search for love.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801561239-ADNFCR
