People should wear clothing that reflects their personality when on a first date.

Alison Tinsley, image consultant and founder of Lavishlifestyleconsulting.com, noted although individuals do not want to come over "too strong", they should still look to give "a hint of what lies beneath".

She added the importance of nonverbal communication cannot be underestimated.

Ms Tinsley stated this means those looking for love should pay attention to "what you look like, what you wear [and] what your body language is doing".

While it is important to stimulate the other person visually, this should not be done to such an extent that the quality of conversation suffers as a result.

The style coach continued by saying people will not go wrong if they are comfortable in their own shells and this advice may be of use to single soldiers on the lookout for a partner.

Last month, personal dating coach Peter Dalton remarked dressing smartly is a good move on a first date.
