Online daters have been warned of the unfortunate reality that some of the people they chat to on the internet will not be exactly as they seem.
New research by 192.com found as many as 18 per cent of people with an online dating profile have lied about their age, while 28 per cent exaggerated how wealthy they are.
The website's spokesman Dominic Blackburn told Sky News: "It's very easy to present yourself in a very different way on online dating sites and social networking sites – it's far easier to do it on that than on a face-to-face basis."
It is a useful reminder for those who are searching for their perfect partner online that they should never be too willing to trust somebody new.
Some ten per cent of those questioned in the poll were even found to have lied about one of the most important details of all – where they lived.
