A veteran of the Vietnam War is hoping to track down his Gravesend-based penpal after over 40 years without contact.

Harvey Whitman started receiving letters from Maureen Lynam in 1969, the News Shopper reports.

The pair kept their correspondence going regularly for one year, but after he moved back to the US in 1970 they fell out of touch.

However, Mr Whitman is now keen to rekindle the friendship with Ms Lynam.

"I remember looking forward to receiving her letters and always smiling as I read them," he told the paper.

The former soldier – who is now an IT executive – described the lady as a "breath of fresh air" whose writings were filled with wit and charm.

Mr Whitman observed he found all of the letters he was sent by Ms Lynam after his mother died and after re-reading them realised they have so much to talk about.
