A new centre has been opened in Gosport to help homeless and vulnerable veterans.

Up to four ex-servicemen and women can be offered a place to stay as they try to piece their lives back together, the Portsmouth News reports.

Seafarers UK, Alabare Christian Care and various individual sponsors have donated the cash to complete the development.

Gosport's MP Caroline Dinenage, who officially opened the building, stated: "For so long we have expected our armed forces to give up so much for us and I'm not sure that we have done enough to help them out as well."

She noted there is a growing problem with homelessness in armed forces members and so schemes such as these can seek to offer them aid.

Andrew Lord, chief executive of Alabare Christian Care – which operates 16 sites across southern England – said plans for further homes in the area are underway.
