Scrabble is a great game and one that can see people get really competitive.

But one player took his desire to win too far at the recent national championships in the US.

He was caught dropping blank tiles – which can be substituted for any letter when forming words – on the floor in an attempt to hide them.

The youngster, who is under 18 years of age, was ejected from the 350-strong event as a result of his actions.

National Scrabble Association executive director John Williams said it was not the first time that cheating had occurred during Scrabble.

"It does happen, no matter what. People will try to do this. It's the first time it's happened in a venue this big though. It's unfortunate," Mr Williams observed.

He went on to note the Scrabble world is abuzz with excitement because of it, which is something that couldn't have been said too often in the past.
