A man will cycle around the UK in order to raise money for a military charity.

Sandy Elliot has set up the CycleForHeroes2012 challenge after his son Kevin was killed while on service in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in 2009.

All of the money raised from the 2,000-mile undertaking will go towards Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association Forces Help.

Mr Elliot told BBC News: "The group allowed me to meet with other families in a similar situation who had lost someone whilst they were serving in our armed forces."

He added over the last few years the support offered by the organisation has been invaluable.

The challenge will get under way on May 1st from Aberdeen, with Mr Elliot hoping to visit 50 military bases along the way and he expects the journey to take him 31 days.

He will also be carrying the Baton along the way, which has been made from a stretcher used to carry the wounded in battle.
