A soldier has helped raise cash to support armed forces by taking part in a marathon that involved pulling army vehicles.

The News & Star reports corporal Rebecca Errington was one of the 24-person team that undertook the 26-mile course around Camp Bastion in Afghanistan.

In temperatures of over 35 degrees Celsius, the team dragged vehicles such as a 14-tonne Huskey and 30-tonne Mastiff in order to raise money for two charities – the British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association and St Dunstans.

They secured a total of £4,000 and Ms Errington said there was a "real sense of achievement" when the group completed the challenge.

"If you were asked to pull a truck over the distance of a marathon you wouldn't ordinarily volunteer, but life in the army isn't quite like that," she was quoted by the news source as saying.

Former servicemen have also been raising money to support soldiers, with the Leigh Journal reporting ex-armed forces members James Burtonwood and Carl Nicholson – along with Neil Cresswell – recently undertook a 14.7 mile barefoot walk for Help for Heroes.
