The nation’s women are set for disappointment this Valentine’s Day, as modern men are rubbish when it comes to chivalry, a new study has found.

According to the Lindt Lindor Code of Modern Chivalry report, more than three quarters of girls would like to get a poem or romantic letter from their hot soldier, but less than half of guys have ever done either.

Relationship expert Jenni Trent Hughes said: "We may no longer be knights in shining armour or damsels in distress, but we still want and need romance – it is part of our emotional DNA."

While many blokes will make a pig’s ear of Valentine’s Day, the study revealed a few things they can do to make sure it goes well.

The first is that they pick up the bill for a romantic meal, as a third of women say they would expect the man to pay.

Troops should also keep their eyes on their date, as 80 per cent of girls said they would get the hump if their date was ogling other women.

Switching off the mobile phone is another must, with a whopping 98 per cent of ladies saying they would get upset if a bloke was texting someone.

A recent study by ROLO revealed that a hug and a kiss are what women want the most for Valentine’s Day.
