Long distance dating has gotten something of a bad rap over the years. We’ve all heard tales of people getting into all sorts of problems because they are away from each other for a long period of time.

However, it really doesn’t have to be that way. When done correctly, long-distance relationships can be fun, fulfilling and long-lasting.

Follow our top tips below to get ensure that your relationship stands the test of time – and space.

Communication

Of course, communication is important in any relationship. But it becomes even more important when you are based in separate countries or you are miles away from each other.

Take some time out every so often, whether it is on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis to tell each other what you have been up to, to see how you’re both doing and to natter.

It is important to ensure those emotional bonds remain strong while you are both away from one another. You can also do it the old fashioned way and write to eachother. Nowadays, however, with so much technology at our disposal, including Facebook and email, it is easier than ever to keep in contact with your loved one.

Visit

If you get the chance, try and visit each other when you can. Whether it is during holiday periods or once in a while, nothing beats physical contact.

If it is not possible to take time out to visit each other regularly, then plan ahead for your next meeting when you know you can both make it.

In long-distance relationships, when you have been away from each other for a while, it makes it all the more special when you do finally get to come together and catch up on lost time.

Support

Mutual love and support is the bedrock of any relationship. If you partner gets ill, hurt or injured while away, they need to know that you are there for them, when it counts. Even if you can’t be there on person, knowing that you are just a phone call away and hearing your voice, will mean more to them than you can ever know.
