Troops who have put a ring on their partner’s finger will be happiest with her exactly two years, 11 months and eight days into the marriage, new research suggests.

A study of 4,000 guys and girls by confetti.co.uk revealed that couples are most comfortable with each other’s bad habits just shy of three years into the union.

By this time their sex life is in full flow and they will have carried out enough DIY projects for their house to feel like home.

Also, couples still have time for romantic meals together, the study found.

Carol Richardson, from the website, said: "They’ll spend the longest amount of quality time together each evening and make small gestures like offering to cook dinner and help with the washing up."

Troops may also want to keep in mind what researchers at the Geneva Business School recently discovered.

They claim the key to a long-lasting marriage is for guys to marry a woman who is five years their junior, from the same cultural background and who is more intelligent than they are.
