Hero soldiers serving in Afghanistan could be the welcome receivers of some new pairs of socks following a drive to ensure the troops abroad have adequate footwear.
Kingsman Richard Nicholson from the First Battalion, Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment has collected 1,600 pairs, the Warrington Guardian reports.
The scheme started when Dot Glassey, a cleaner at Stockton Heath Police Station, wished to help her son Daniel and his colleagues in the regiment after he complained he was running out of the feet warmers.
After a coffee morning and numerous appeals, more than 1,600 socks had been donated, as well as batteries, flags and paddling pools to be sent over to Afghanistan.
Ms Glassey said she was overwhelmed by the response and wanted to say thank you to all who had taken part in the project.
Leanne Huntingdon, whose partner Paul Burgon is currently serving in Afghanistan, recently raised more than £1,000 for Help for Heroes by taking part in an assault course and organising a disco night.
