More than 2,000 people headed to Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, over the weekend to participate in a tricky challenge.

The Paras' 10 is a race spanning ten miles and aims to offer an insight into life as a soldier, the Northern Echo reports.

A number of competitors carried backpacks weighing 35 lbs to simulate the efforts by those in military training as they completed the task yesterday (September 11th).

Major Ben Harrop says: "The race is one of a selection of events people have to do to enter the Parachute Regiment."

Money raised from the occasion – totalling an estimated £100,000 – will be donated to the Parachute Regiment Charity.

The Paras' 10 route is an active military training area and is used to prepare troops and their vehicles before heading on operations around the world.

For just one day of the year, members of the public are allowed to sample the gruelling itinerary by joining the contest and attempting to complete the course.
