The armed forces are at the forefront of what Britain stands for and what it does, a council member has claimed.

Councillor Tracey Dixon from South Tyneside Council was speaking on Armed Forces Day as the local community came out to rally behind the military, the Shields Gazette reports.

Speaking in regard to the event, the politician added: "This day is so important as it gives us, the public, a chance to pay our respects and show our support for servicemen and women past and present."

As well as marking Armed Force Day, the get-together also commemorated the 150th anniversary of South Shields Territorial Army.

The soldiers of 205 Battery and 3rd Durham Volunteer Artillery, both currently serving and those that had served before, gathered at St Michael’s Church in the region’s centre for the occasion.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup recently revealed it means a great deal for troops to see their work overseas is appreciated back home.
