A heroic soldier has been recognised by the Queen at a special ceremony.

Lance Corporal David Timmins was given a military honour by the Royal family member at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, the Press Association reports.

Mr Timmins had previously fought for his country in Afghanistan, where he lost an eye.

He was accompanied by a conductor, a musician and a janitor among others at the event – which marked the beginning of Royal Week.

The Queen also presided over the traditional Ceremony of the Keys, which commemorates the onset of the celebrations each year, the Aberdeen Press and Journal noted.

She was offered the keys to the city as a symbolic gesture but, as is customary, she handed them back – an act that shows she entrusts their safekeeping with the city’s elected officials.

Thousands of well-wishers recently lined the streets of Wareham to show their support for 200 Royal Armoured soldiers from Bovington and Lulworth Camp who were parading in the region.
