Singletons are spending over £3 billion every year on dates as they look for that special someone.

This is according to research carried out by YouGov and highlights how much importance people place on finding a partner.

The average cost of a night out has been put at £47, with individuals parting with over £413 a year.

As well as this, nearly £275 is spent on clothes, while more than £130 gets blown on transport.

The study highlights how the price of love is spread across a number of sectors, as entertainment, cosmetics and gifts also have to be considered.

Part of the reason for such high figures being recorded could be the increasing popularity of online dating.

It comes after Cathy Comerford told the Guardian about how she used the web to find love at the age of 40, after face-to-face meetings had led to a series of unsuccessful relationships.
