Those with army pen pals might have been heartened by news that staff at a pub in Cheltenham have proposed to give up a night's wages to support injured troops.

A charity bash is set to be staged in a bid to generate funds for the armed forces, with those in attendance encouraged to dress up in military-themed costumes, This is Gloucestershire reports.

Proceeds from the wages alone will account for £250 and may capture the imagination of single soldiers far and wide.

Regarding the event, Mike Hayes, deputy manager of the Hog's Head, suggested he has a deep and abiding commitment to the armed forces.

"When you are in the army or navy it is great, but it is afterwards when people find it is not easy to fit back into society," he explained.

Meanwhile, the Jarrow and Hebburn Gazette has reported a concert will be held in South Shields to raise funds for stricken soldiers.
