While some people think that speed dating is a quick, sure-fire way to find love, new research from a German university has suggested it may not be a very fast way to find romance.

The Daily Mail reported that a team of researchers at Humboldt university have discovered that speed daters spend an average of £500 and take up to 75 hours to find a new love interest – and 50 hours of dating to find a new sexual partner.

In the university’s study, only 15 of the 384 volunteers taking part said they had found a sexual partner from the event – and a year later, only 17 of the participants were in a relationship.

Single blokes may instead find that they have more luck online when looking for a lady to keep them company.

Anne Hollands, president of Relationships Australia, said that singles should not take a "tick-the-box" approach to finding a special someone, but should instead go into online dating with an open mind.

Single soldiers may wish to sign up to an online dating service or social networking site if they are looking to play the field.
