Some £4,000 has been raised for Help for Heroes during the hosting of the Southport Comedy Festival.

Over 700 people attended the gala and well-known comedian Jason Manford was among those who performed for them, the Formby Times reports.

Festival director Brendan Riley described the whole show as "fantastic", adding he was "amazed" at how much money it was able to collect.

Speaking of the military, Mr Riley remarked: "I really respect them for the work they do. I have been entertaining troops in Cyprus for three years now and it's a humbling experience."

He added former 8 out of 10 Cats star Manford was more than happy to be part of the proceedings because he is a big advocate of the armed forces.

Justin Moorhouse – who played the role of Young Kenny in Phoenix Nights – Rob Rouse and Junior Simpson were among the other comedians who entertained the crowds at the event.
