A group of South Shields ferrymasters are going to cycle for nine hours as part of a charity initiative.

Bob Paterson and his five work colleagues will be on exercise bikes at their local Asda store, the Shields Gazette reports.

The challenge is part of a nationwide push organised by Asda to raise cash for Help for Heroes (H4H).

"We will be using exercise bikes and will be cycling for nine hours between us. We are trying to get around as much of the UK as possible," Mr Paterson stated.

He added there will be a giant map marking out how well they are doing.

All of the men taking part have been cycling on the road in an effort to prepare themselves for the event.

Mr Paterson was inspired to collect money for H4H after his son Kevin recently completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
