The generosity of the good people of Crewe and Nantwich has given soldiers on the frontline in Afghanistan a massive boost.

Grenadier guardsman Gareth Tomkinson and his comrades say they have been overwhelmed at the 437 Christmas gift boxes that have been sent to them, the Crewe Chronicle reported.

His mum Elaine Yates told the newspaper that there are still more parcels to be sent out and is hoping that people’s generosity doesn’t end when Christmas passes for another year.

"Gareth has said they’re very grateful for everything they get out there, particularly the warm clothes they’re getting because it’s minus 14 at night," she said.

Ms Yates also wants the team at West Street Post Office to be given credit because they have been working in their own time to make sure the parcels get to troops on time.

British soldier warrant officer Class 1 Rob Seabridge is sending hundreds of gifts to orphans in Sierra Leone to put a smile on their face this Christmas.
