Keeping fit is a must for anyone who wants a place in the British army and an exercise guru has said that there are four areas of the body troops should focus on to build their muscle mass and get into tip-top condition.

Marco Borges, an exercise physiologist who has worked with everyone from Jay-Z to Gwen Stefani, told the Miami Herald that the important joints to work on are the shoulders, hips, knees and elbows.

What’s good is that troops don’t need exercise equipment to build these areas up, with some simple exercises strengthening and conditioning the muscles, with brisk walking a good place to start.

"These are the four major joints that engage the biggest muscle groups of the body," Mr Borges told the newspaper.

Another tip troops should remember is that running barefoot is better than wearing trainers, which can damage their joints, according to research from JKM Technologies and the University of Virginia.
