After tucking into turkey, potatoes and stuffing on Christmas Day, soldiers should go for a walk to burn off the calories, an expert on the subject has claimed.

Ruth Somerville, from Ramblers, says that a brisk walk is ideal for soldiers who have gorged on festive treats, as they can go at their own pace and change it as and when they please.

As well as being a great way to fight the festive flab, it is a chance for them to get the whole family out together for some fresh air and is better than slouching in front of the TV.

"Walking is ideal for the post-dinner calorie burner, as you can tailor it to your own pace. If you feel stuffed to the gills with mince pies, then you can walk gently at first. Gradually you’ll burn them off," Ms Somerville says.

Troops may want to go for a walk in a pair of Skechers Shape Ups, which strengthen the leg muscles, according to Fitness Footwear.
