A group of 100 soldiers has begun a cross-country march from Scotland to London to raise money for comrades wounded in Afghanistan.

The troops from Number Seven Company, Coldstream Guards started their journey even as the snow continued to fall across the nation.

More than 350 years ago, General George Monck led 6,000 men, formerly part of Oliver Cromwell’s New Model Army, on a march to parliament and the boys and girls from Number Seven Company plan to follow in their footsteps.

Captain Mark Hayhurst, who organised the march, said the heavy snowfall won’t stop anyone from trying to raise money to support soldiers.

"We have had to be more direct in our approach, rather than going through the country, we are just using the main road. Morale is high. We are just starting off. The sun is shining and we are just cracking on with it," he stated.

Captain Ed Poynter, from the 2nd Battalion The Rifles, recently revealed he is going to walk the whole length of Hardian’s Wall to raise money for the British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association.
