A father of three soldiers has endeavoured to raise money for brave troops fighting overseas for their country.

John Nelson, who has a daughter, a son and a son-in-law serving in the armed forces, collected £1,050 for the Help for Heroes charity through his local Morrisons supermarket in Widnes, the Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News reports.

His daughter Jodie and her partner Jim Williams are working on behalf of the United Nations for the Afghanistan national government after meeting when serving in Iraq.

Mr Nelson's youngest son is part of the Parachute Regiment and is also on duty in the south-central Asian country.

It is not the first time the fundraiser has generated cash for the cause, as he also took part in the Three Peak Challenge in 2009, collecting £2,000 in the process.

The Daily Echo recently reported three wounded servicemen – corporal John Legaloudec, lance corporal Tyler Christopher and captain Bernie Bambury – took part in an ice skating challenge to raise money for Help for Heroes.
