Two sisters have completed a trek across a jungle in Costa Rica in order to raise money for the military charity Help for Heroes.

Carol Smedley and Nicky Brant collected over £6,000 through various fundraising initiatives – such as BBQs, cabaret nights and auctions – before heading out to the country, This Is Local London reports.

The pair decided to do their bit for the charity after Ms Brant's son was hurt while serving in Afghanistan.

"We may not be able to stop our servicemen and women being injured, but by raising much-needed funds, we can help them get better," Ms Smedley observed.

Along the way the ladies encountered snakes and spiders, had to sleep outside and went water rafting, while they were joined by 28 others on the expedition, including some injured servicemen and four Gurkhas.

The party also had to scale hills up to 2,000 ft high as part of the trek.
