Singletons are more likely to seek out love on the web over the Christmas and new year period because they are surrounded by companionship.

This is according to Barbara Lavi, a family therapy specialist, who noted that they may see the position they find themselves in "as a complete contrast to who they are" and so they set out to take action to change it.

Isabel Moya, a youth psychology therapist, added people who are not in a long-term relationship are put in a "tough position" during the holidays.

She added they are often left to "navigate social situations" that can be very "uncomfortable" because they do not have a partner.

Because of this, individuals could turn to online dating in an effort to find that special someone.

Last week, relationship psychotherapist Paula Hall stated those looking for love should get a close personal friend to help them prepare an online profile that is a true reflection of them.
