The Kardashian clan may have given the world much to celebrate since their ascent to fame in recent years, but for aspiring Kims and Kylies, few trends have really caught on as much as the trend for selfies. However, taking these photos may not be as glamorous as everyone's favourite reality stars portray.

According to a new warning issued by government officials in Russia, selfies can actually lead to a less than healthy scalp, with the photos – specifically those taken with a group of friends – providing an ideal platform for the spread of head lice.

Rospotrebnadzor, a government body which advises on well-being, has advised internet users and Instagram enthusiasts that bunching together with a group of chums for the arm-length snaps gives the bugs a perfect chance to climb and jump from head to head.

While it seems like a logical piece of advice, and one that will no doubt leave selfie fans scratching their heads at the very thought, this warning has been taken with a pinch of salt by many in Russia. This is thanks to the governmental bodies reputation for making controversial suggestions.

Former head Gennady Onishchenko once played a key role in banning food and drink exports from nations unpopular with the Kremlin. He also once advised Russian people that they should be killing crows, because they are "feathered wolves which spread bird flu".

From one internet favourite causing controversy to another – a Hello Kitty fan has been arrested in the US for drink driving. Carrie Gipson, 37, was pulled over by police in Gorham, Maine, US, after she was spotted driving somewhat erratically in the early hours of the morning.

She was arrested after failing to provide a breathalyser sample, but that's not the strangest part. Ms Gipson was, at the time of arrest, dressed as Hello Kitty. Her costume consisted of a frilly pink dress, and even a mask of the popular Japanese character. ADNFCR-2867-ID-801757281-ADNFCR
