A mother who takes time out of her own schedule to send cakes to soldiers operating on the front line has been given an award from Help for Heroes for her efforts, the Milngavie & Bearsden Herald reports.

Louise Bennet, whose son George has served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, began baking treats for soldiers back in 2003, and since then she said she has been baking up to 500 every week. In August of this year, she shipped off her 100,000th cake to a soldier stationed at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan.

Her biggest baking claim to fame came last year when she sent baked treats to Prince Harry and even received a Christmas card from the royal in return.

Louise also has two other sons who have connections to the army, with one captain in the Royal Marines and another having applied to the Territorial Army.

She told the news provider: “It was an overwhelming and very emotional night and I felt extremely honoured. To be presented with it from ‘the guys’ was very special.

“We must do everything we can in the future to continue our support for them, particularly financially."

She said that the work being done at Help for Heroes is "remarkable" and that they are going to need the help of the public for years to come.

Ms Bennet's cakes are still being sent to serving soldiers in Afghanistan, as well as going to injured service personnel in Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital in Birmingham.

Elsewhere, the West Berkshire Cruisers car club held a successful event for Help for Heroes at The Starting Gate pub in Speen recently. With over 100 modified cars turning up, as well as a raffle, prizes and stalls, organisers managed to raise an impressive £2,000 for the charity, well ahead of their target of £300. ADNFCR-2867-ID-801759526-ADNFCR
