Those who support the armed forces are being recognised in a new national awards scheme.

With backing from Prince Harry, the Royal British Legion has introduced the Friends of the Forces Awards, which are designed to praise individuals, community groups and businesses that support the military.

Prince Harry, who saw active service in Afghanistan with the Household Cavalry, said he is "very proud" to be involved in the awards, which he believes are an "excellent idea".

"I know how important support from home can be," he explained.

"For those serving in the British armed forces, the knowledge that others are thinking of them has a hugely positive effect that cannot be underestimated."

During the launch event, Sir John Kiszely, national president of the legion, called on members of the public to submit nominations, which will remain open until April 14th.

Earlier this month, veterans minister Kevan Jones launched a scheme aimed at bereaved armed forces’ families, allowing them the chance to embark on activity holidays.
