There are many things people can do to support Help for Heroes, but one of the most effective is arguably to take part in the Sahara Challenge.

Each year, the activity sees a team of people trek across 100 miles of desert over five days, raising money in the process, reports Click Liverpool.

Businessman Norman Peires is one of those to have completed the gruelling task, which was made harder for him by the fact he has suffered from colon cancer.

He recalled how reaching the end with his wife, the prospect of a three-star hotel seemed like a dream and "absolute luxury".

But it had all been worth it, particularly as he came across one competitor called Simon, who had been left severely disfigured by his injuries but still managed to complete the trek.

"Simon walked the whole thing with us; he was the life of the party. It was amazing to see someone with an attitude like that," Mr Peires explained.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801558610-ADNFCR
