Did you ever use the excuse that your dog ate your homework in school?

It was a favourite of many people looking to explain why they had failed to carry out an overnight task.

However, rugby player Jason Tovey had to rely on a version of this age-old excuse when he couldn't board a flight to Toulon with his teammates in the Heineken Cup.

The Cardiff Blues outside half was left without a passport after his dog mistook it for his dinner and devoured it.

"Buster is always chewing things but usually it's my socks and shoes. As soon as I saw the passport I thought I'd never get through airport security with it," he added.

Although he saw the funny side of the story at the time, I'm not sure his coach will be too impressed, as his team went on to lose the game 45-25 without Tovey in the side.
