Help for Heroes has benefited financially after charitable individuals in the north-east opted to host a special event in its honour.

A number of rugby players put on a charity match near Ferryhill in a bid to raise as much funding as possible for the military support body, reports the Northern Echo.

Several former soldiers were included in the line-ups, while a number of local residents also joined in with the bruising encounter.

In total, the event raised £1,424.65 for Help for Heroes, while it also brought in enough cash for a £531 donation to be made to the Thrislington Banner Group.

Mowden Park Rugby Club from Darlington did its bit for the good cause by providing the shirts worn by the two teams, and West Cornforth Community Centre acted as the venue for the match.

Coming together to play and enjoy sport is one of the most effective ways to raise cash for a worthy charity.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801603914-ADNFCR
