In a bid to raise funds to retrain injured soldiers, Battledown Brewery in Cheltenham has launched a traditional best bitter called Hero, with ten pence from every pint being donated to the Rugby for Heroes cause.

Manager of the beer company Roland Elliot-Berry said all involved are looking forward to "seeing the results that Rugby for Heroes will achieve for our brave forces", with Freddie Burns and Charlie Sharples of the Gloucester rugby team unveiling the ale at the Somerset Arms pub in the city.

According to the BBC, the initiative itself was set up in 2009 after a number of professional sportsmen – including Ryan Lamb, Anthony Allen and Olly Morgan – worked together to produce a calendar to generate funds for Help for Heroes.

This comes after Sophie Reade – former Big Brother winner – sponsored soldier Michael Collins on a long distance walk to raise cash for Help for Heroes, the Leader Live reported.
