Rugby fans have supported soldiers by purchasing special shirts to raise money for Help for Heroes.

Whitehaven players recently pledged to play a one-off match in honour of the charity, the News and Star reports.

To mark the occasion, more than 100 commemorative shirts went on sale, costing £30 each and marked with the colours of the charity.

Within three days of their release they sold out, despite more than three months until the game between Whitehaven and South Wales Scorpions takes place on July 10th.

Billy Rudd from Unique Sports store says: "To sell over 100 in just a couple of days is not bad going.

"Interest, so far, has been good and hopefully we'll make some money for the cause."

Another sports association raising funds for the organisation is Colchester and East Essex Cricket Club, which is planning a summer ball to assist Help for Heroes, the Essex County Standard reports.
