A group of rowers have taken to the water to raise cash for two worthy causes.

The team of 40 managed to generate almost £5,000 for Help for Heroes and Scarborough Royal National lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in a challenge organised by members of Scarborough Sub Aqua Club, Scarborough Evening News reports.

Participants raised the healthy sum by rowing the restored William Riley lifeboat between Scarborough and Whitby.

Press officer for Scarborough RNLI John Porter said: "It's a marvellous donation and the people have worked very hard to raise such a staggering amount of money."

The news provider noted the William Riley was built in 1909 and was involved in the rescue of the Rohilla, which took place in October 1914.

It was almost another 20 years before it was decommissioned, with the decision being made in May 1931.

Worcester News recently reported the Pershore Phoenix Dragon Boating Club collected more than £2,000 for Help for Heroes after it held a fundraising racing day.
