England captain Rio Ferdinand has revealed that David Beckham was enthralled by his recent visit to Afghanistan and thanked troops for the great job they are doing on the battlefield.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, the 32-year-old Manchester United defender said that Beckham talked of how brave the soldiers are and what a vital job they are doing in fighting the Taliban.

Ferdinand added that it was wonderful to see troops and members of their families given tickets for England’s recent friendly against Mexico at Wembley and said the support they will provide during this summer’s World Cup will be invaluable.

"It is great that we are getting support from the boys in Afghanistan. With them being so far away they probably think we don’t really care about what is going on, but we do," he told the newspaper.

Private Ryan Campbell, from the Royal Marines 40 Commando, told Cambridge-news.co.uk that David Beckham’s visit to Afghanistan gave everyone’s morale a big boost.
