A retired policeman is to trek 300 miles in order to raise money for a military charity.

Brian Finlayson, who was also a member of the Coldstream Guard, will tackle the West Highland Way and then walk from Carlisle to St Bees, the Berwick Advertiser reports.

He expects the challenge to take him one month in total and all of the money he collects will go to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help.

Mr Finlayson observed he has been involved with SSAFA Forces Help for the past 20 years and praised the national charity for the good work it carried out to "support our heroes and heroines".

"They helped me out many years ago when my little boy died and I want to give as much back as I can," he remarked.

Mr Finlayson will be carrying a pack weighing 30lbs throughout the challenge and will be camping overnight.
