A glass of red wine could be good for one’s teeth, helping to fight tooth decay and other oral health problems, new research has found.

According to a study conducted at Pavia University in Italy, due to be published in the journal Food Chemistry, red wine contains chemicals which can stop harmful bacteria from sticking to people’s teeth.

The researchers claim that just one glass a day can help guys and girls maintain healthy teeth and avoid the need for fillings.

Now the team are investigating whether the antioxidant compounds which help fight tooth decay can be extracted as a form of treatment on their own.

A study published in the FASEB Journal earlier this year found that the reservatol in red wine brings numerous health benefits and helps to control inflammation in the body.

Dr Gerald Weissman, editor-in-chief of the publication, said the therapeutic properties of the tipple could possibly help the development of life-saving treatments.
