Driving through thousands of miles of desert is surely a huge feat of endurance for anybody, but for one team of British soldiers taking on the infamous Dakar Rally, the task could be even tougher.

The Race2Recovery team is mostly made up of armed forces members severely injured while on service and they are looking to become the first disabled group to complete the gruelling journey.

Their motto is 'beyond injury – achieving the extraordinary' and as part of their efforts, they have raised over £100,000 for the Tedworth House Personnel Recovery Centre in Wiltshire, which helps in the rehabilitation of wounded personnel.

One of the participants, navigator Corporal Tom Neathway, who lost both legs and his left arm while serving in Afghanistan, explained the team are aiming to show it is still possible to do great things, despite adversity.

The 2013 Dakar Rally gets underway on January 5th and takes place over 9,000 km of the world's toughest terrain in South America, with the course winding its way from Lima in Peru to the Chilean capital Santiago.
