With heavy snowfall across the UK over the last week or so, RAF and Navy Search and Rescue crews have been hard at work.

Sea King helicopters have been thundering through the skies, with the crew of HMS Gannett dealing with lots of incidents involving sledging accidents and transferring an injured chap to Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital just 25 minutes after being tasked.

Rescue crews also had to transport a mother and her new-born baby to North Devon District Hospital.

Lieutenant commander David Reese said RAF and Navy personnel have been called because they can do things ordinary search teams can’t.

"Sledging slopes are difficult for ambulance crews to get to, so helicopter assistance is often the easiest, safest and quickest means of getting the casualty to hospital," he stated.

Choppers from HMS Gannet were recently called to help two climbers in Royal Deeside who became stuck while climbing Lochnagar.
