Residents are being encouraged to show how much they support soldiers by attending a parade this week (July 20th).

Troops from the Royal School of Military Survey (RSMS) at Denison Barracks will walk through Thatcham to mark the Freedom of the Town honour.

Thatcham Town Council has offered the status in recognition of the work done by the members of the armed forces and mayor Lee Dillon claims the day will be one to remember.

Once freedom is granted, the school can march through the town's streets on all ceremonial occasions with flying colours, beating drums and a musical accompaniment.

Brigadier Hallas and Mr Dillon will inspect the troops then formally present them with a scroll.

It begins at 12:00 BST with a quarter peal of the local church bells and the parade will march back at 14:40.

RSMS claims to trace its roots back to 1833, as it was set up under the title of the Royal Military Academy Woolwich.
