Mark Hagan, the duty manager of a Fellgate Jarrow pub, has managed to gather £1,200 to participate in a charity Sahara trek later this year, where he'll be supporting Help for Heroes.

The Shields Gazette reports that Mr Hagan held a charity race evening at his pub, the Lakeside, to help him towards the £1,200 required to join the trek.

He's told the news provider that the evening brought in £500 – something he is very happy about.

And he wants to double the £1,200 figure in an effort to support Help for Heroes. He'll be taking the nine day long desert journey this November.

The manager wants to do the trek to honour his late World War Two veteran father in law.

October 5th will see Mr Hagan hold another charity event, this time at Hebburn's White Lead pub, he told the news provider.

The eventual trip will include 40 hours travel, both walking and on camels, which over 50 people are set to take on between November 14th and November 23rd,

Donations toward Mr Hagan's charity action can be made by texting HAGN99 then an amount in pounds (like £2) to 70070 via the Just Text Giving service.

"The training is going well. I am getting out and going for walks whenever I can," he commented to the news provider.

Meanwhile, LuttonToday.co.uk reports that a Jeffry Archer and Frederick Forsyth fan has released an eBook, profits from which will be given to Help for Heroes.

Graham Webster, 65, has released the book to mark the First World War centenary.

It's called The Luckiest Man Alive and tells the tale of a man's experience when he was in in the Royal Navy, and a chance event proved life-saving, Mr Webster told the news provider.

“It’s only 7,500 words and it’s available on Amazon for £1.53,” the author has said.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801743505-ADNFCR
