Escaping from jail requires a lot of planning.

People cannot expect to just be allowed to walk out the front door and so they often concoct crazy schemes in an effort to get free.

Two prisoners at a jail in Ceres in the central Brazilian state of Goias decided it would be a good idea to make a hole in their cell and make a run.

The first man had no problem, but the other inmate – who is 16 st – failed to factor his weight into the equation and was left red-faced as a result.

Rafael Valadao ended up trapped after he could not squeeze through his own escape hole, breaking his ribs in the process.

To make matters worst, prison guards stood around, laughed and took photos before they decided to free him.

A police spokesman said: "He was screaming with pain when help arrived. He seemed to have underestimated the size of his stomach."
